Top Ten {Tuesday}We are “officially” potty training Hannah. I’m hesitant to even write about it, mostly because I feel like when you announce that you’re potty training, a certain expectation is set on you and your child. And for me, I am all about fun training and don’t want it to be pressure based. Now that I’m two kids in, I’ve learned a few things {though am far from an expert}. But here ya go:

1. Train Early – This isn’t for everyone, but I am all about starting potty training before 1 year. Nothing major, just sit the babe on the potty and let them get use to it. I even go so far as to not provide any kiddie potty seat – as I want the babe to be okay with a real toilet. That might go a step too far for you, so do what you like {little potty, potty seat, etc}. But I’ve found with the girls, they catch on to the potty super well since we started so young {even if real training doesn’t start till 2}.

2. Sing Praises – Because of personal family convictions, we don’t use food as a form of praise/reward. Instead, I sing my little heart out. And both girls have gotten a kick out of it.

3. Show Grace – Kids aren’t going to get their training the first time. Or even the fifth time. You’ll have accidents. Some days a lot. Show them grace. Show yourself grace.

4. Show Even More Grace – Have a kid who’s been potty trained for a year and now starts having accidents? Show even more grace. Trust me on this.

5. Be Prepared for the Worst – If you’re potty training, please, please, please don’t leave the house without a spare set of clothes for your kiddo. Even if you think you’re in the clear, always prepare for the worst. {And show grace when it happens, cause it will.}

6. Put on a Show – In addition to my awesome song, lots of dancing, fun shouting and rowdy play takes place while I’m training. Especially in the beginning. I remember with Julia, once running through the house shouting “she did it, she did it!” after she had a successful potty trip. Man, that girl was on cloud nice for the rest of the day. And so was I. 😉

7. Set the Bar Low – With both girls, my first goal was to have them learn to poop in the potty. Then pee. Not both at once. I set the bar low and then s-l-o-w-l-y up it as I see them progress.

8. One Step at a Time – For whatever reason, nighttime/naptime training takes a while for my girls. And that’s okay. I don’t mind doling out the money for nighttime pull-ups. It’s part of life and I am so okay with it {especially since we don’t need them during the day}. I say, day train and then night train. One step at a time.

9. Set the Right Expectations – Of course I’d love to have a bootcamp weekend where Hannah is full potty trained in two days, but that ain’t gonna happen. For one, I’m not that patient. And for two, that’s not how our family rolls. Instead, I’m setting the expectation that Hannah be day trained before Baby Boy arrives.

10. Have Fun – Having fun and potty training don’t always go hand-in-hand. But they can. Realize that kids like to please you and really like to feel like big kids. So, with a little grace {if you haven’t caught on by now, potty training is all about the grace}, some crazy mama dancing and lots of praise, potty training can be a really rewarding experience. For you and your kid.

Have you ever potty trained a child? If so, what are some tips you’d add?

Hannah turns two tomorrow and we are celebrating her birthday with a party this Saturday. Because of her crazy love for the Paul Frank monkey, I decided we needed a monkey theme party. And what do monkeys {especially my monkey Bear} love to do most? Eat. While I am going for banana themed foods, I’m also adding Hannah’s other favorite foods. Here’s what is on the menu for Saturday’s party:

1. Banana Chocolate Cupcakes*

2. Banana Bread

3. Cheese Slices

4. Peanut Butter Sandwiches with Banana Slices

5. Fruit slices

6. Pita Chips and Hummus

7. Monkey Bread

8. Peanut Butter Smoothies

9. Carrots and Dip

10. Your Suggestions – Any more banana themed ideas of what to feed a group of kids and parents?

Top Ten {Tuesday}Lately, I’ve been mid-sentence when I forget what…. um, um… oh, what I was going to say. Last night, Jonathan and I went out for a date. It was a work function of sorts, and I had the chance to meet a few of his co-workers. I also met the CEO of his company. In a shining moment of pregnancy, after the introduction was made, I knew {just knew} I was suppose to know this man, but for the life of me I couldn’t remember. Then, it went off like a light bulb and I blurted out “Your wife just had a baby!” really loud. Yeah, that was nice. And that is mild compared to the other things I forget. Like:

1. Buying two yards of fabric and that have magically disappeared. {Update: I just found the fabric, rolled up and tucked into the girls’ closet. Who knows.}

2. Using a pair of scissors, remembering to put them back, and they are now gone.

3. Looking at our daily menu multiple times a day because I can’t remember what I’m suppose to make.

4. Meeting a wonderful lady and her two adorable kids at the pool before leaving for vacation and then forgetting I ever met her. *sheepish face*

5. Going to the grocery store for 2 {TWO!} items and forgetting why I went.

6. Calling the girls “Jul-Han-Mab-Mic, hey kid!” because I can’t get their names straight.

7. Being absolutely convinced that it’s Monday, when it’s really Wednesday, but actually Thursday.

8. Standing in the grocery aisle trying to remember what is more $.162 per ounce or $.167.

9. Having schooltime that sounds like “This is red. I mean, green. No, no, really, it’s blue. Sorry Hannah.”

10. Sending an email to a friend on Thursday, only to see this morning that it never got sent {though I swear it did}.

I’d say things will go back to normal once Baby Three arrives, but I know things will just get worse for a while as sleep deprivation sets in and then I really won’t remember anything.

Have you ever suffered from pregnancy brain? Or nursing brain? Or just old brain? Whew.

Top Ten {Tuesday}First, let me clarify: I think doctors pretty much rock. If it weren’t for doctors and scientist {which at times are one in the same} we wouldn’t have all the amazing health treatments that we have. And for that I am totally grateful. But still, I really, really dislike going to the doctor. Why? Well, pull up a chair and I’ll tell ya.

1. I’m a know it all – Rarely do I go into the doctor because something is wrong and I don’t know what it is. So going seems like a waste of time.

2. I don’t actually know it all – Last time I checked {which was today, actually} the only initials that come after my name are m.o.m. and not M.D. Crazy, right?

3. House – I fully blame my anti-doctor policy on the t.v. show House. Cause we all know, when you go to the doctor with a “common cold” you walk away two weeks later healed from some crazy unpronounceable disease.

4. My mom’s a nurse – And as such, I feel exempt from ever having to see the doctor. It’s like my free-pass in life.

5. Old habits die hard – I had this really fabulous doctor in Iowa, who, 3 years ago, up and left her practice to move to another city {where her husband was moving}. Since then, it’s never been the same for me. Amy L – if you ever read this – please move to Austin.

6. Doctor + 2 kids = disaster – I don’t like taking my girls for their check ups when I’m fully with it. Taking them when the appointment is for me? No thank you.

7. I’m pregnant – Therefore, I assume they can’t actually do anything {or give me anything} and my time will be wasted {another reason to dread #6}.

8. I’m stubborn – See #1.

9. I have an overactive imagination – See #3.

10. I don’t like to admit defeat – But after 2+ weeks of coughing, sneezing, and nasty-nastiness coming from my nose, I’m waving my white flag and heading to the doctor today. Wish me luck.

How do you feel about doctor visits?

Top Ten {Tuesday}While Texas is always home, for six years, Iowa was my home too. I’ll admit, it took a little time for me to adjust to being outside of the South, but once I gave Iowa my all, I grew to love it. And of course, the people I knew there were awesome. I miss them daily and wish we weren’t so far away {hey y’all – Texas is a big state *hint-hint*}.

While I could easily list ten things I miss about my Iowan friends, let’s be honest, some of the things I really miss about Iowa are pretty superficial. Without further ado, here they are:

1. Rain – Texas is currently in a drought. Apparently the worst in nearly 50 years. I miss thunderstorms. And rain.

2. Close Stores – Thankfully, we do now live less than a mile from HEB – but I miss living near two major stores in Coralville {oh, New Pi, how I love you}.

3. Traffic – I laughed when I first experienced “traffic” in Iowa. Slowly it became normal and I got frustrated at taking 20 minutes to get across town. Now, when I sit in traffic for over an hour to get across town, I think “Hmmm… Iowa traffic wasn’t so bad was it?”

4. Library – Truth be known, Coralville’s library rocked. And sadly, I have yet to find a library here that beats CPL’s awesome kid program/section.

5. Leaving my windows open for most of the summer – I enjoy the fresh air, which usually leads to having my windows open. A lot. Which ain’t really an option when it’s 90+* outside. Yeah…. I miss having my windows open for most of the summer.

6. Snow – What? Did I just hear a collective hiss from all my Northern friends? Well, it’s true. I do miss the snow. Or missed it over the winter. Though, I am realizing that I don’t miss it staying around for months.

7. Rain – Did I mention that we haven’t had much rain in these parts? Yeah, well, we haven’t. And I wouldn’t mind a good rain storm.

8. Seasons – Other than summer, the seasons in Texas don’t last long. Which is nice, because you can literally spend 8-10 months outside. But sad if you, you know, miss snow.

9. Rain – We are about 5 inches below normal {which is, ironically only 5 inches} for the year. And I’m a little freaked out to learn that our household water is rationed by the state. Having never owned a house in Texas before, I never knew that they rationed how much water a home could get.

10. Rain – I know, I know… I just really and truly miss the rain.

Top Ten {Tuesday}Much like my love of television, I really love movies. And with the exception of most rated R movies {containing gratuitous language and scenes} I like a wide variety of movies. I mean, I’m the girl whose owns The Adventures of Ociee Nash and Ocean’s Eleven. So, my taste is certainly all my own. While we have seen our fair share of movies in the last year, there are still several more that I’d like to see.

1. True Grit {1969} – While technically I’ve seen this {forced by my parents, I should add} I actually don’t recall any of it and it seems pretty good.

2. True Grit {2010}

3. Les Miserables {1998} – I’ve read the book, but recently seeing a video clip has made me really want to see the movie.

4. Waiting for Superman {2010} – I have a soft spot for documentaries, and this one just looks fabulous.

5. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 {2011} – Need I say more?

6. Winnie the Pooh {2011} – Who doesn’t want to see a lovable bear and his friends?

7. The First Grader {2010} – While not a documentary, this true story is still very compelling.

8. Transformers 3 {2011} – I don’t even know what to say. Sometimes you just need a good, mindless, action movie.

9. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader {2010}

10. You’ve Got Mail {1998} – Ok, I’ve seen this movie too many times to admit. But it’s really cute and I really want to re-watch it. Like now.

What are some movies you’ve been wanting to see?

I’m not sure about where you live, but here in Texas summer has fully arrived. While, maybe Texas summer hasn’t arrived, but summer by most normal standards. The high today is 90. N-i-n-e-t-y. Riiiight. I forgot that part of the deal when I signed up to move back here. Summers get hot. It starts in March. Ends in November.

During college I wore a lot of skirts and tank tops. But two and a half kids later, piecing together several different coordinated outfits doesn’t seem too feasible for me {unless of course, they are Gymboree hand-me-downs from my awesome SIL}. And so my love of dresses is renewed a little earlier this year.

As my stomach expands, I’m going to need to add in a few flowing dresses and transition out my fitted ones. Here are my favorite options:

Old Navy Ruffled Linen-Blend Sundress in Coral Tropics {Notice the empire waist? Much needed}

Old Navy Floral Print Jersey Dress in Blue Print {How delicate and pretty is this?!}

Merona Maternity Ruffle neck Dress in Purple {Let’s face, I’m probably gonna need to “bump” up come June}

Old Navy Ruffled-Yoke Jersey Dress in Blue Typhoon {This just speaks “cute and comfy”}

Mossimo Cami Maxi Dress in Avalon Sea {Though I’m weary of spaghetti straps}

Old Navy Flower-Graphic Tank Dress in Black Jack {Simple yet way cute}

A Pea in the Pod Sleeveless Rosette Dress in Charcoal {Very beautiful, very impractical, very expensive}

Motherhood Sleeveless Ruffled Dress in Green/Pink Floral {This looks so sweet and innocent}

Anthropologie Pangaea Silk Dress {So feminine, so silky, so, so expensive}

Merona Carey Dress in Ebony {I actually am ordering this to wear in my high school best friend’s wedding in late May}

Do you have any summer dresses that you’ve been eyeing? Any good maternity dress suggestions?

I have a habit of biting off more than I can chew. I set goals for myself that seem achievable, but are pretty unrealistic {especially when raising 2.5 kids}. And then when I fail, I am overly hard on myself.

In January 2010, I set out on a quest to accomplish 30 things before I turned 30. All great goals, though some were a bit lofty. Like knitting my girls a blanket, when I can’t even knit. Or sewing a dress, when I don’t know how to sew. Or getting my teacher’s certificate {which in Iowa would have meant getting my Master’s and in Texas means redoing part of my undergrad}. Then there was a cross country move, financial choices for not taking a trip overseas and realizing why on earth would I want to start my own business {I am so not a business type person – I will leave that to Jon}.

Now, while I typically would hang my head in defeat, I’ve realized, my 30 before 30 is about setting goals for things I want to accomplish. And it’s totally okay to change them up some along the way. While I might not have learned to knit in the last year, I did learn to finally bake with yeast {and that’s saying something!}.

So, without further ado, here is my revised 30 before 30 list {the first ten are the new additions}. And, if things don’t get done, I’m okay with that – so long as I keep making progress.

1. Learn to play Over The Rainbow on my ukulele

2. Potty train Hannah

3. Learn to build a fire without using matches

4. Learn to crochet {pot holder}

5. Form a pen pal relationship {specifically with my friend in Switzerland}

6. Finish War and Peace {currently reading}

7. Attend a UT football game as a family

8. Learn to bake with yeast {I’m still experimenting, but I’m feeling pretty confident with yeast now}

9. Take the girls camping overnight

10. Take both girls on a horseback ride

11. Run a half marathon (DONE!! 4/18/10)

12. Learn to sew a dress (Learned to sew, now just working on a dress, still)

13. Learn conversational Spanish – 25 phrases {I am up to about 15 phrases – Muy bueno!}

14. Write a children’s book for the girls

15. Learn to play 3 Christmas carols on the piano {I can currently play 2}

16. Read through the Bible {I am about half way through}

17. Have a Girls’ Getaway Weekend (DONE! 9/16/10-9/19/10)

18. Go on a family mission’s trip

19. Visit Colorado

20. Host an over-the-top 5-course dinner party

27. Own a Leg Lamp (DONE! 11/18/10)

28. Learn to make crepes (DONE! 2/21/10)

29. Have another baby {due November 2011!}

6. But the time in your day doesn’t

In college I perfected my sleeping skills. After all, isn’t that what college is about? Learning to sleep in class? No? Well, all the same, I learned how to nap effectively, sleep anywhere and fall asleep fast.

However, I never learned how to stay asleep. Which is fairly crucial, especially as a mom. But, I’m learning and thought I’d pass along my tips for middle of the night insomnia.

1o Ways to Battle Nighttime Insomnia

1. Stay in bed – Unless you just have to get up to pee, don’t get up. Getting up just makes you wake up even more.

2. Don’t look at the clock – During my pregnancy with Julia, my insomnia got so bad, I’d be awake for hours. I remember a co-worker telling me to turn the clock around, so that when I did wake up, I wouldn’t fixate on how much sleep I was loosing. It helped more than I expected.

3. Read – This is best done with an iPad or Kindle, so you can keep the lights to a minimum, but reading can help put your mind at ease and induce sleep {or just get you through a few more chapters!}.

4. Journal – A lot on your mind? Right them down to get them off your mind so you can rest again.

5. Watch T.V. – When I just can’t sleep, and reading doesn’t help, I slip downstairs and turn on some PBS. Snooze….

6. Drink some hot chocolate – Typically speaking, I avoid eating anything overnight, but drinking warm milk does wonders. It’s soothing and relaxing.

7. Warm shower/bath – The warm water is a lot like warm milk – soothing and relaxing.

8. Change locations – Moving to a spare room or the couch can help trick you mind into thinking it’s time to go back to sleep.

9. Embrace your “alone time” – Let’s face it, sometimes sleep just isn’t gonna happen. So do something. Clean. Prep for the day. Catch up on emails. And hope you can get a nap the next day.

10. Pray – Saturday night, I was up for 4 hours. I even took a crawesome 3 mile run at 2:30 am. None of my “tricks” for falling back asleep worked. In the end, I just prayed. And prayed a lot. I battled through some crazy fears and doubts. By the end, I fell asleep peacefully.

Do you battle with insomnia? What are your trick/tips?
