Our New House? Hope so!

When we bought our last house, it dawned on us that we had inadvertently gotten into real estate – as that was our third property. It made sense, then, to buy again once we moved to Texas. However, there are a lot more options in Austin and narrowing down what/where we wanted proved to be a challenging task. So we made a list:
1. Good community
2. Good school district
3. Nearby park/pool
4. Close to downtown
5. Close to Jonathan’s work
6. Affordable – Turns out the houses closest to Jon’s work are not within our price range {by 300K’s+}.
7. Master bedroom on same level with kids’ room – Not something terribly common in homes here in Texas
8. Four bedrooms
9. Separate dining room
10. Decent size yard
It seemed that the more houses we looked at, the less we liked. Something was always off. Too much. Not enough. Needs repair. Too far away. The list went on. Then, last week, out of no where, Jon got an email from our realtor about a house. They set up a showing for the next day. Turns out, the house was in the neighborhood we wanted – but get this – down the street from two families we knew from our missional community! We looked back at our top ten list and realized that this house met every single need/want we had listed – plus some! The next day we put in an offer and the accepted it the next morning.
So…. if all goes as we are praying, come March 31st, this will be our new home:

This weekend, Jonathan and I were discussing fun facts about ourselves. You know, those completely random aspects of your life that people probably don’t know about. I thought today, for a laugh, I’d share some of mine.
1. I went by Liz when I first moved to Texas in 2000. {Elizabeth is my middle name.}
2. As a child, I was convinced I wanted to be the female James Bond.
3. I’ve had my cartilage pierced 3 times. The third time being yesterday.
4. I can eat a whole batch of brownies in one sitting. I have the extra 5 pounds to prove it.
5. I’ve had my car break down two times in Arizona. I’ve only been to Arizona twice {Arizona and I aren’t on good terms}.
6. I’ve read Scarlet Pimpernel numerous times and have the end of Chapter 16 practically memorized.
7. I sliced my fingernail off with an apple peeler this morning. It hurt. A lot.
8. I snuck into a taping of Conan O’Brien.
9. I’ve met Woody Harrelson and Jack Johnson. Both of them were shorter than I expected.
10. Pizza, hot or cold, is perhaps my favorite food.
What are some fun random facts about you?

Valentine Surprises

Usually Jonathan and I don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day, since neither of us are big fan on the holiday. However, this year we decided to “celebrate”. I say celebrate loosely, because we didn’t go out last night, we didn’t even really acknowledge the day beyond a nice family dinner. But, there were some unexpected surprises that happened:
1. Flowers – Can I brag a minute? Jonathan does a wonderful job of bringing me flowers on a regular basis. However, typically speaking, he doesn’t bring me flowers on days that you’d expect – such as Valentine’s. So it was a complete surprise when he walked in with these:
2. Cupcakes – There is a fun little cupcake shop here in Austin – Hey Cupcake! Yesterday I splurged on their Luvcake for dessert. I’m fairly certain is fulfilled my caloric intake for a week, but it was worth every bite.
3. Balloons – In addition to my flowers, Jonathan brought home pink and white balloons for the girls. They loved them.
4. Dinner – I experimented with a rice and chicken dish for Valentine’s Day. We were all impressed with how great it tasted. Looks like we found a new favorite recipe {score!}.
5. Date – While we didn’t go out last night, we are going out tonight. Which means….
6. Dressing up – I get to wear this:
7. Clean house – Let’s face it, once kids are involved Valentine’s Day changes {along with everything else}. To have a clean house made my Valentine’s.
8. Spurs Game – Our family are big Spurs fans. They played the Nets last night and won. Needless to say, my husband was quite excited. Happy Valentine’s Jonathan!
9. Valentine’s Hater No More – As I mentioned, I’m not a big fan of Valentine’s Day. But as the girls are getting older, I’m starting to enjoy it. Aside from the balloons and cupcakes, the girls didn’t really celebrate – but I’m kind of looking forward to next year {and the years after} when we can really do something fun with them.
10. My Valentine – Jonathan is an amazing husband and father. He makes my life brighter, filled with laughter and joy. I can’t express just how grateful I am to be his wife {Love you babe!}.

One year ago, I started a photo project – to take a family picture once a month. And while it seemed easy enough, it was hard coordinating a photo every month. Yesterday was the last day, which actually didn’t happen until this morning. Here are my favorite pictures from the last year:
1. June 2010
2. March 2010
3. October 2010
4. July 2010
5. May 2010

I’m leaving today for Blissdom. And much like when I left for New York last fall, I have taken some steps to help Jonathan out while I’m away. Because, while some days I’d like to think my full time job is my blog, it isn’t. My full time job is taking care of my family. I take a lot of delight in my work and want to make sure that I can still fulfill my wife/mother roles while away. So here are some ways I’m helping Jonathan cope with me being away:
1. Organize the girls clothes –
Each day is bundled together, with the girl’s name on it. Unwrap, dress and you’re ready to go! {I did provide layers, in case the weather goes all crazy on me.}
2. Organize meals –
I have the freezer stocked with dinners and the pantry loaded with quick and easy snacks. I’ve also made a list of side options to go with each meal.
3. Organize activities – While Jonathan is super active in the girls’ lives, he doesn’t quite know what activities there are to do around town like I do. So I made a list for each day to let him choose.
4. Sticky notes –
I did this when I traveled to New York. Jonathan said it was helpful {for other things – like coffee}, but the dog never did get fed…
5. Movies – While I tend not to want the girls to watch much television during the week, I know it’s an easy pass time. I’ve made sure there are several episodes of their favorite show recorded so they can watch a set amount as needed.
6. Diapers/Wipes/Pull ups – Jonathan isn’t as into cloth diapering as I am {read Jonathan doesn’t cloth diaper}. To prepare for the week, I stocked up on disposables. Because there is nothing worse than having to run to the store just for diapers.
7. Back up help – We were very blessed to live right by three close families while in Iowa. At the drop of the hat we could ask for help and they could be there in no time. Now, as we are still meeting people, I’ve had to do a little more planning. Still, we’ve been really blessed with people willing to help Jonathan {even if it is just inviting him to playdates} so that he doesn’t feel alone in the process.
8. Answering my phone – I’m notorious for not answering my phone. And it drives Jonathan bonkers. Because of that, for the next few days, my phone will be attached to my hip {not literally – not a big fan of those hip holders}.
9. Sweet loving – I’m making sure Jonathan gets some sweet loving before I leave. And… It’s not what you think. I made him a batch of cookies {as bribery for girls} and am currently baking some blueberry muffins – which are his favorite.
10. Grace – Taking care of the girls and being a homemaker isn’t Jonathan’s full time job, it’s mine. I need to loosen up any expectations I might have for how things should go – or honestly, how the house should look when I get back. I need to be overwhelmed by the fact that my husband is showing me this grand gesture of love and respond in kind, with grace and love.
What do you do to help your husband prepare for you being away?

In one week {ONE WEEK!} I leave for the Blissdom Conference in Nashville. I am beyond excited. Thrilled, actually. I don’t fully know what to expect {it’s my first time going}, but I do hope to get a lot out of the conference. There are so many great seminars lined up, that it’s kind of hard to narrow down just want I want to participate in. But, I’m sure what ever I go to will be great.
1. Knowledge – From search engine optimization to editing your posts, the seminar descriptions look packed with information. And while I want to go to every single one, I’m sure I’ll be on overload before I know it.
2. Community – I’ve “met” some amazing women over the last year. Grown to really know them as they share their lives through their blogs. It’s provided me with a since of community that has been really incredible. I can’t wait to meet them in real life next week!
3. Networking – Along with the women I have “met” there are still so many great blogging women out there I haven’t. Having the chance to meet new women and expand my network is something I’ve been looking forward to for a while.
4. Creativity – I’ll be honest, I’ve been creatively dry for the last several weeks. Almost as though I’m on auto-pilot. I keep telling myself “Make it to Blissdom” because I’m convinced I’ll walk away full of wonderful creative ideas. Or at least I really hope so!
5. Seeing my family – Blissdom is held each year in Nashville – my childhood city. So going this year means I get to spend a little time with my family. Which is really awesome, because I miss them, even if it’s only been a month since I last saw them.
6. Staying at Opryland – Ok, this might be kind of a silly reason to be excited about Blissom, but the conference is held at Opryland Hotel. In all my years, I’ve never spent the night at Opryland. It’s like a daydreamy place – I had my senior prom there, I’ve walked through it’s halls dozens of times with my family – but I’ve never been lucky enough to spend the night. Until now. And as if it couldn’t get better, I get to stay with Alicia from Alicia’s Homemaking. Squeal!! So excited!!
7. Mama vacation – I’ll be gone for five whole days next week. Five. The longest I’ve ever been away from either of my girls. And while that’s a little sad, I’m taking Alicia’s point of view when she emailed me “I’m going to go SIX days without having to wipe down a high chair!” Woot!
8. Having fun – While Blissdom is sure to teach me a lot, I know it’s not just going to be a boring classroom – in fact, it’s going to be a blast. Between the kick-off party and the pj party, I have a feeling there’s going to be a lot of giggling women all around.
9. Being myself – Writing brings out a part of me that nothing else seems to and I love it. So having the chance to spend time tapping that resource is such a great thing.
10. Fashion – Ok, since I made 2010 my year to bring out my fashionista, I’m pretty excited about some of the finds I came across between now and then. In particular, a gold necklace. Which might not seem like a big deal, but to me it’s huge. I don’t wear gold, so to do a gold necklace is a big step. I’ll be wearing it at Blissdom so let me know what you think!
If you’re going to Blissdom, what are somethings you’re looking forward to?

I use to make fun of my mom for all the different phrases she used on my siblings and me growing up. And even to this day {sorry Mom!} I tease her about never getting our names right. Some how I am always transformed from Sarah to MarSarah {my sister and my name mashed together}. My brother’s have it worse, since there are four of them {LinJessFletchJohn}. My mom would always tell us that we’d be the same way once we had our own kids. I never believed her. Until now. The things I never thought I’d say, until I became a mom:
1. Don’t put that in your mouth.
2. Get your hands out of the toilet.
3. Fingers out of your nose/mouth.
4. Wipe that look off your face.
5. This is your side, this is your sister’s. Don’t cross the line.
6. Oh! Someone has a poopy! {Said in either total praise or total disgust – depending on the circumstance}
7. Go ask your dad.
8. When I was your age…
9. I’ll give you a cookie if you…
10. Because I said so.
Are there things you said you’d never say/do that now as an adult/parent you find yourself doing just that?

It’s hard to explain to people that I’m actually pretty introverted. I think they are thrown by my willingness to talk, be loud, enjoying large cities/crowds and sharing my thought/opinions. Seems very extroverted, if you ask. But given the choice to spend a night alone or out entertaining, I’m likely to want to be alone. A night of hosting or going out can leave me drained if I’m not very careful. I love people, but I love being alone. A lot.
As Julia has gotten older and her personality/character has really grown, I see a lot of me in her. She loves crowds, but from a distance. She loves new situations, but stays quite until she’s comfortable. She loves being around other kids, but can sit off and play alone, refusing to interact. She loves talking/being silly, but can clam up on a moment’s notice. All very similar reactions to how I was as a child.
Now that we have moved away from her friends {who she’s know since she was born} and she’s actually have to make friends, I’m working on bringing out her extroverted side. Here are a few things Jon and I’ve been doing to help her grow:
1. Talking it through {before} – When we know we are taking Julia into a new situation, we talk her through it. Before we ever get to our destination, we explain {to our best ability} what she can expect. New kids. New part of the city. Certain rules {at someone’s house}. We try to prepare her to know what she’s getting into, so it’s less “new”.
2. Talking it through {after} – Once we’ve gone somewhere {especially where there are other kids}, we ask Julia who she meet, if she talked with them and what she/they did. We focus on praising her for her efforts and encouraging her to continue learning about the new kids she meets.
3. Talking to others – Julia constantly wants to know “What’s her/his name?” Every time she sees a child close to her age, she wants to know about them. For a while {when we were in Iowa} I was giving her the brush off {awful, I know}. But now, I’m realizing it’s one more way she’ll meet new kids. When we’re at the store and Julia spots a new kid, if she asks about them, I tell her I will help introduce them. Sometimes she says yes {so I go over and start the introductions} and sometimes she says no {at which point I remind her that introducing herself is a way to make new friends}.
4. Playgroups/Play settings – Getting Julia involved in playgroups is vital to opening her up. We haven’t had a ton of opportunity to do this since moving {with the holidays a lot of people have been gone}. But yesterday, and later this week, we have several events planned in order to introduce {or re-introduce} Julia to other kids. Continually seeing the same people helps her break out of her shell and feel comfortable.
5. Cutting her slack – It can get a little frustrating when Julia asks to play with kids she sees, but then backs out when I help her through the introductions. But I have to remember she feel vulnerable {I know I did as a kid!} and that she just needs more time and praise for her small efforts.
6. Loving her – I’m pretty amazed at how comfortable Julia feels at our new church. The first few times we dropped her off at Sunday School, she was a bit upset. But now, she’s loving it. And a lot of it has to do with us loving her. Showing her that we’re leaving, but are coming back. Knowing she’s secure in our love seems to help her confidence even when we aren’t around.
7. Getting active – It seems that when Julia is active, she forgets that she’s introverted and her extrovert can shine through. Because of that, we’re enrolling her in soccer and gymnastics. She’s tried both of them out, really enjoys it {plus she burns a ton off energy, so I enjoy it!} and seems to be more outgoing while she’s playing.
8. Talking about our friends in Iowa – All of Julia’s friends in Iowa hold a special place in her {and our} heart. No one she ever meets will be the same as they were. So we want her to remember them and think about the special things she did with them. It helps lead into what she can do with the new kids she meets.
9. Encouraging friendship with Hannah – One of the best things about the girls being close in age, is that they have a real friendship between them. We encourage the girls to play together, just like they would a friend.
10. Being a friend – I don’t think my role as a mom is to be a friend all the time. It crosses the authority boundary a bit too much for me. However, I can still be a friend who plays house, sings songs and dances. We’ve been doing those things a lot recently. And I’ve really enjoyed them {although Ring Around the Rosy makes me so much dizzier now than as a child!}.
We’re still working through all these different steps and it seems to be working well. I’m hoping as the holidays end and we’re more into our routine, Julia will flourish and meet new friends.

Top Ten Christmas Highlights
Posted on: December 28, 2010

I’m still in shock that Christmas is over. Every year, after the food has been consumed, presents opened, friends or family have left, and the stillness of post-Christmas life set in, I’m always a little sad and shocked that things happened so quickly. This year was no exceptions. It was a busy, fun {with some drama} filled weekend. Here are my holiday highlights:
1. No sleep – I knew going into the weekend none of us would sleep. And I was all too correct. Between family arriving late at night, festivities being delayed, and general funness to be had, there wasn’t much time for sleep. Thankfully, the girls made up for it by sleeping in the first day we were home.
2. Food – So. Much. Food. And someone brought cake balls, which I had never had, which were so incredibly amazing. I stepped on the scale yesterday. Hmmm… let’s just say I started back running this morning.
3. The presents – Or lack thereof. We didn’t give the girls, or anyone, anything for Christmas. The girls did, unexpectedly, get some gifts from other people, but there was such a peace at not feeling obligated to purchase anything for anyone.
4. Food – Did I mention there was a lot of food? Well there was. Cake balls and reindeer cupcakes. Tamales and sweet bread. Turkey and my mom’s dressing. Poached eggs with Bearnaise sauce. Hmmm….
5. Movie watching – Our family loves A Christmas Story and has to watch it at least once during the holidays. I watched it with my two younger {cause I can no longer say little} brothers. An absolute favorite.
6. Cousins galore – My girls have been on a cousin high for days. All Julia can talk about is “My cousins this”, “My cousins that”. It’s sweet as can be.
7. Grandparents are the better version of parents – Julia thinks her Grandpa hung the moon. In the weeks leading up to seeing my parents, Julia talked non stop about them. “My Dampa got this for me”, “My Omi lives in Tennessee and wants to see me”. I could quote her for days. This girls loves her some Dampa and Omi.
8. Drama – Ok, every holiday has to have some drama, right? Or is that just me? Literally, it was me. Sad to say, I had a few not-so-great moments this weekend. I even have a post to tell you all about it.
9. Far off friends – I got to visit with Emily, my friend who I met once in Iowa, before she moved back to Texas and then on to Scotland. We’ve formed a friendship over our blogs and we had the best time spending an afternoon with her and her two kiddos.
10. Food – Ok, now I know I’ve mentioned the bounty of food we had. But did I mention I skipped making dinner on Christmas {because we had so many leftovers} and ate Nutella on French bread instead? Yeah, well I did. And it was awesome.
How was your Christmas? What are some of your favorite highlights?

A Texas Christmas Top Ten

It’s been 7 years since I was in Texas for Christmas. Since 2004 I have celebrated Christmas in colder climate areas. So it’s been a transition to go from 30 degree weather to 70+ degree weather during the holidays. But there have been some great holiday highlights over the past several weeks:
1. Random Christmas trees on the highway – For the last couple of decades, “mysterious” Austinites have crept out at night to decorate cedar trees along a major highway. Nothing feels more festive than driving down the street and seeing 100’s of trees decorated.
2. Outdoor Shopping – Outdoor shopping centers are popular in Texas, since it never gets too cold to deter shoppers. We visited the newest center, The Domain, this last weekend. It was so much fun walking the strip, looking at all the beautiful displays and ending it with a huge Christmas tree.
3. Food Selection – This has more to do with being in a bigger city in general, but I can’t get over all the wonderful options for food that we have. And while that doesn’t seem very Christmas-y, it is when you’re preparing to cook for your whole family.
4. Zilker Park – A huge park just south of downtown, Zilker Park {home of Austin City Limits Festival} does a wonderful Christmas tree “poll”. It’s a poll that is shaped like a tree, with the shape outlined in lights. It’s a sight to behold.
5. Trail of Lights – The area in and around Zilker Park is decorated with lights, as a trail leading to and through the park. I’ve seen it in the past and it’s beautiful. Sadly, this year the city decided to cancel the trail of lights to conserve money.
6. Being outside. A lot – Since the weather isn’t cold, the girls and I have had some great chances to be outside during the day. I could get use to spending the entire holiday season playing at the park {just get back to me come July!}.
7. Holiday parties – I went to a cookie baking/exchange party on Saturday with a group of women I met from church. We have two holiday events we have been invited to this week. That’s good ol’ Texas hospitality at work!
8. Jonathan’s work schedule – Jonathan is working just three days this week. And then only two days next week. His company has an unwritten rule that employees take plenty of time off during Christmas to spend time with family. It’s awesome.
9. Reindeer cars – Maybe this is popular elsewhere, I know I’ve seen it just a few times before in Iowa. But, people here have gone crazy with dressing their cars up like reindeer. And it’s hilarious.
10. The weather – This, actually, is the only thing I haven’t been loving about Texas at Christmastime. I know the snow gets old {just as hot weather gets, well, hot}, but it hasn’t felt quite like Christmas without seeing white covering the ground.
What are some of your favorite city holiday highlights?
