Maybe I’m taking it too far

But, this is what I’ve packed for a weekend getaway.
I’m not sure what’s more disturbing, the fact that I have 10 outfits for 3 days, that I’m already packed two days in advance, or that I still feel like maybe I should pack more {you just never know what you might need}.
If you see me in person from now until Friday, please don’t laugh about me wearing the same clothes every day. Ok? Thanks.

Last year we celebrated Christmas in July as a family {you know, because I’m obsessed with Christmas}. This year, we’ve taken it a step further and celebrated with our church. Well, the church might not have known we were celebrating, but I did.
Our house church meets on Sunday mornings. Before the actual meeting, we have a time of fellowship over coffee and muffins/bread. Today was our family’s turn to provide the food. So, I made pumpkin bread with a cream cheese glaze and gave all the kids a “stocking” with goodies.
The kids were pretty pleased with their stocking {or at least the treats inside}. We didn’t sing any carols, because Jon wasn’t around this morning {been working crazy busy hours for a site launch}. But, I have been playing Christmas carols around the house and we’re having roasted chicken and all the fixins’ for dinner. Yum-O!

I really, really love television. I’m a little concerned that you can’t say that and be a Christian. But nevertheless it’s true. There is something nice in ending a long, hard day with mindless tv {like “I didn’t know I was pregnant” – seriously, how can you not know?!}
But I think what I love more than having television is not having television. We just got cable last night for the first time in over a year*. The last time we had cable, we got it while my brother lived with us – as a way to make our home a place where he would invite friends over and watch football games. We had it for about 9 months. Until that point, we’d been without it for 2.5 years.
Sounds strange to go so long without cable. Especially for a self declared telephilia like me. But what I love about being without cable is that it makes you not need cable. I’ve been content the last year without it; was content the 2.5 years before that. And now that it’s installed and at my finger tips? I have no overwhelming desire to watch it. Don’t get me wrong, I will watch it {after all I hear there’s a You’ve Got Mail marathon on WE}, but I don’t feel some attachment to it like I did years ago. Not having cable has shown me I don’t need cable and quite frankly has made me love it all the more because it’s become a treat and not a necessity.
*If you’re wondering why we got cable; Jonathan’s grandmother is moving in with us soon and enjoys her “shows”. I have a post all about the family change coming soon{ish}.

Proofing yeast for the baking idiot

You might recall my post about being scared to use yeast. Well, it’s only taken 5 months for me finally get over my irrational fear and use it! I currently have dinner rolls rising {at least I hope they’re rising…}.
First off, I was completely miffed by the idea of proofing my yeast. Maybe it’s because I have no clue what I’m doing, but I kept thinking “So, if I proof the yeast and it’s active, then what? What do I do with the stuff in the cup? How to I know that putting the yeast straight into the mixture won’t kill it?” Turns out, you use the yeast you proof. Of course it would be that simple. Duh…
Here’s a simple way to proof your yeast:
Measure 1/2 cup of water into a coffee mug.
Measure 1 tablespoon sugar into a small bowl.
Measure 2 1/4 teaspoon yeast {or one packet} into a small bowl.
1. Heat water in microwave until temperature is about 100 degrees {which was 12 seconds in my microwave}.
2. Add sugar. Stir until dissolved.
3. Add yeast, stir {won’t dissolve fully} and set for 5-10 minutes.
If your yeast looks like this:
Then you’ve done it right and your yeast is active. Now, apparently {I say apparently, because I still don’t know the final outcome of my rolls} you can just add this mixture into your recipe. You will need to subtract 1/2 cup water, 1 tablespoon sugar and 2 1/4 teaspoon yeast from the original recipe.
If my rolls turn out {and even if they don’t} I’ll make sure to let you know all about it!
Confessions of a bad Southern mama

I don’t drink sweet tea.
{But, I do drink my sacrilegious unsweet tea from a mason jar, so that counts for something, right??}
I’ve never really enjoyed sweet tea, but always want to. Add in my lack of a true Southern accent and I feel as though I’ve slighted my Southern heritage. But, I’m working to remedy my drinking ways. This week I made our normal two batches of tea {unsweet for me, sweet for Jon and the girls} and I’m drinking my tea half and half. Verdict? I’m not in love, but it’s growing on me.
The night we ran out of diapers

Because of some mama laziness forgetfulness, we didn’t have any disposable diapers for Hannah on Tuesday night. See, we’ve never done cloth over night with the girls, only disposables. Originally, with Julia we didn’t want anything else {wet cloth diaper} contributing her already bad sleeping habits. And with Hannah, well it’s just easier. That is, until you forget to buy diapers.
Which is why I love cloth diapers. No matter what, I always have them. I can reuse them. They go through multiple children. And depending on what style you get, they last the same child for their whole diapering life. Not to mention, they are really cute. You’d be surprised at how many people compliment us on Hannah’s wraps.
Especially the cow prints {which happen to be my favorite}.
We made it through Tuesday night without issue. And again Wednesday night. I still haven’t gotten disposables. I’m getting hooked on using cloth overnight and not planning to turn back any time soon. Eek!

A passion for fashion

A couple of weeks ago, I told Jonathan if I could do college all over, I’d major in fashion design. That might make several people laugh {don’t feel bad if you do, Jon did too}. My typical outfit is jeans and t-shirt. Oh, and a ponytail. If I buy something new, I usually double triple check with Jon that it looks good. And if I feel the least bit self conscious, I usually will never wear said outfit again. That is until now.
After I confessed my deep desire to Jon, I thought “Why can’t I just do fashion design now? Why can’t 2010 be my year?” So, ladies {and gentlemen}, I’m declaring 2010 to be my fashion year. And my two latest fashion statements?
Aside from having to get use to wearing 5 inch heels, I’d say I’m getting off to a rocking good start with my new fashion self. Even my parents were so impressed, that “Dampa Dave” wrote a post about the shoes.
{Hoping I make Emily proud with these big ol’ earrings!}

If you’ve ever gotten to talk to me for very long {especially after October 1st}, you might know that I am a little obsessed with Christmas. So, when Southern Living sent me an offer for this:
I seriously had to stop from reading it cover to cover and waste spend the entire afternoon planning out my Christmas meals, decorations and parties. Because, after all, it is only June 1st and I still have 207 days till Christmas.
Dating is an adventure

Jonathan and I have a wonderful opportunity to have regular date nights. Typically we go out to eat, maybe grab a fancy dessert, have a few beers or the like. This week we decided to “spice” things up. No, not like that.
This week we went to play racquetball and go swimming. Let me tell you – I have never played racquetball and was a bit apprehensive. There is something about being stuck in a box with a ball flying at you that seems a little off. But once I learned the rules, it was actually a lot of fun. And, if you ever have some frustration to get out – then it is perfect! After racquetball, we headed over to the pool.
Call me crazy, but I have an irrational fear of large bodies of water. Perhaps I watched a little too much Shark Week and Jaws as a child. Whatever the case, I don’t really enjoy swimming. Unless it’s in a baby pool. So when we got to the pool and I saw it was twelve feet deep, I laughed and told Jonathan he was on his own. No way am I getting into a pool that size. After all, sharks only need like three feet of water to kill you. Shark attacks happen my friends. Even in chlorine filled pools. Of this I’m convinced.
After a little persuasion, Jonathan finally got me in the water. Then he wanted me to swim. I tell ya, this man is crazy. First he wants me to stand in a box while a ball comes flying toward me, then he wants me to get in a shark infested pool and then he wants me to swim? Crazy, I tell ya, just crazy. (But I love him all the same.) We swam half a lap before I noticed some boogie boards and thought that using one would be a much better idea than actually swimming. It didn’t make me go any faster or make me look any less goofy, but at least with a boogie board I can fight off those pool sharks.
Despite my hesitations, when it was all said and done I had a really fabulous time. It was something completely out of the ordinary and provided Jonathan us with a lot to laugh about. Here’s to keeping dating an adventure!
My life is a comedy routine

Yesterday I took the girls for a walk to Jonathan’s work. It’s two blocks from our house and we cut through some apartments and the library parking lot, making it not necessary to take the stroller. I strapped Hannah in the mei tai and let Julia hold Jack’s leash. We had to cross a large street that is currently under construction with no crossing signals. We do this several times a week and our routine is always the same – I have Hannah on my back, I pick Julia up and carry her across while holding Jack’s leash. Only this time, we had another element to worry about – a balloon.
Right after I picked Julia up, she let go of the balloon she’d been carrying from home. Rather than fall to the ground, it immediately got swept into the street by the wind. My first thought was to jump out and get it – but reason quickly took over. So instead I watched as it got farther away and Julia began melting down. “My balloon! Mama! My balloon!”. I told her that the balloon was gone, there wasn’t anything we could do about it and we’d get her another one. And in that very moment, I knew I had a blog post.
You see, I love comedian Brian Regan. And in his routine Standing Up he actually talks about parents’ reactions when children lose balloons. He says how parents usually act miffed by how upset the child is when they lose their balloon, blowing of the situation by telling the child it’s not a big deal, there are plenty of balloons in the world and they they can always get another one. He goes on to say, “Imagine if that balloon floating away was your wallet. ‘Don’t worry, we’ll get you another one.’ ‘No, I want that one!'”. I realized that to Julia this balloon was just as important as my wallet or phone – something I’d surely track down.
So I ran across the street to chase down the balloon. In order to try to catch the balloon before it got even further away, I kept carrying Julia in my arms (remember Hannah’s still on my back) while Jack trotted by my side. I’m sure we looked pretty hilarious running after a half deflated purple balloon that seemed to always be just out of reach. After about half a block, we found it behind a building just quietly rolling around on the ground. When I picked it up, Julia started squealing with joy “Balloon! Mama, my balloon!”. Her face showed such delight and joy – making it totally worthy my efforts. I told her I would hold on to the balloon until we got back home to ensure we didn’t lose it again. We finished our walk about 30 minutes later, all making it safely back – balloon in hand.
