A Wife Loved Like The Church

As I round out the end of this pregnancy {just over 2 weeks till EDD}, I’m finding myself grumbling a lot more. Joseph is determined to already prove he is different from his sisters, and as such, has brought on some random, highly uncomfortable, end of pregnancy issues I never dealt with during my previous pregnancies. But really, I have so much to be grateful for, that grumbling just doesn’t seem right. I loved Alicia’s gratitude post and thought I’d do my own.

1. Cooler weather {specifically cooler nights} and being able to leave our windows open.

{photo credit}

2. Good friends who threw a Dr. Seuss themed baby shower for us.

3. Jonathan’s new job – Oh yeah, did I forget to mention Jonathan got a new job? Well, he did. And now he’s working two days from home {score!!}.

4. My daughters – Their lives, their laughter, their overwhelming love for each other.

5. Starting my Bible Study Fellowship class last week.

6. Having the energy to make homemade bread {I highly recommend this recipe}

7. My mom and her mothering {even when you’re nearly 30, it’s still nice having a mom who looks after you}.

8. Getting all the finishing touches taken care of in Joseph’s room.

9. Listening to the girls sing.

10. Julia’s constant request to hear David Crowder Band How He Loves Us – and the reminder of just how much He really does love us.

What are you grateful for this week?

I clearly remember hitting a point in my pregnancies with Julia and Hannah where it was challenging to actually be around people. Doesn’t that sound awful? But, it’s true. I didn’t want to be around anyone. I just wanted to bury myself away and sleep until I went into labor.

I’ve officially hit that point again.

The difference between pregnancy 1, 2 and 3 is that you get less and less of a choice to hide away. Kiddo 1 and 2 simply won’t allow it. And while my natural instinct is to crawl into my bed and stay there until Joseph arrives, Julia and Hannah are helping me put on my game face and face the world. It’s good for me. It’s good for our family. Well, so long as I have my coffee.

So, is it time to call it quits? Not quite. But please excuse me while I drink another pot of coffee in hopes of waking up.

I came home from the store on Wednesday to find a nice little UPS box on my porch. When I opened it up, this is what I found ::

My friends, Leah and Amy, got me a rockin’ cool post-pregnancy gift. It’s a water belt used for running. You can’t see in this picture, but in addition to the awesome water bottles, there is this front pocket for your ID, keys, phone, etc. It’s a runner’s dream. Now I am even more super excited for my first post-Joseph run!

Then yesterday, I posted this picture with the caption “For all you curious minds, here’s my octo-mom rivaling, are you over due, must be twins, huge 36 week belly” ::

It was my tongue in cheek way of poking fun at all the crazy comments I’ve gotten lately. Because, dude, they have been rolling in daily. And while the comments are more face in palm than hurtful, reading so many sweet comments from my facebook/twitter friends really made my day.

Then, to round off the day, I scored us a free Domino’s pizza for dinner last night, thanks to Jill. And who doesn’t love free pizza and a night off from the kitchen?!

What Friday Joys do you have to share?

My brother, Jesse, recently became a Scentsy Consultant. If you knew Jesse, that sentence would have you rolling on the floor with laughter. He’s a military guy, through and through. After serving several years as an officer on a nuclear submarine, he’s now an instructor of Electrical Engineering at the US Naval Academy. Not exactly what you picture when you think Scentsy Consultant. But, he’s really getting into his new adventure, and I wanted to spread the word.

If you’re unfamiliar with Scentsy Candles, they are a wickless alternative to traditional candles. I first heard about them in Fall 2009 when I saw some in my gym’s locker room. The next year, a girlfriend hosted a Scentsy party and I bought a plug in warmer. I was hooked.

{photo credit}

What I love about the plug in, is that it acts like a nightlight for our bathroom {or kitchen}, while providing all the benefits of a candle. And while it might seem small, the scents that I have used always smell really great, without being over powering. Scentsy has tons of different scents, ranging from Baked Apple Pie to Clean Breeze and Flirtatious {a personal favorite} to Hemingway {a manly cedar like smell}.

This month’s feature item is the Snapshot full size warmer. It’s has an adorable photo holder for your favorite picture {a really cute gift for a grandparent}. If you order in the month of October, you’ll receive 10% off.

As the holidays are approaching, Scentsy makes for a wonderful and easy gift. Or, if you’re like me, you just keep it for yourself so you can enjoy the smell of pine trees without the real tree mess.

Go check out Jesse’s site :: Scentsy Candles

If you’re in the Annapolis area, he will gladly help you host a party. Or, if you’re interested in a party but not nearby, he can hold an online party for you.

***Disclaimer :: All opinions about Scentsy are my own. In exchange for writing this post, Jesse gave me “coolest sister ever” status. Oh, and a replacement plug for the one that I broke during our move. But, I would have written the post just for the status.

I love to read. Love, love, love. However, that hasn’t always been the case. I remember pitching a fit in 7th grade when my mom made me read “Little Women”. Clearly, she didn’t realize how long that book was and that it had no pictures and that it was written so, so long ago. Pure torture to my pre-teen self. I begrudgingly began reading.

And I loved it.

From that moment, my life was changed. I read every book I could get my hands on.

When we had Julia, I was convinced that to make a reader, you need to read to your children. So we read. A lot. Know what? That girl wants to read all.the.time. She’ll even chose to read over watch television. Be still my grateful heart.

About three weeks ago, Julia’s preschool sent home flyers for Scholastic Books. I remember Scholastic from when I was little, but hadn’t looked into it until we got the flyer. I think I circled every item on the flyer. And then I realized I could order from their website. Whoa. My first go ’round, I had over $100 worth of items in my cart. Jonathan had to remind me that we didn’t need all those books right now and would have plenty of chances to buy them in the future. I whittled down my list to under $70 {really, that was getting it to the least amount – books are addicting}.

We got our order this week. While I set aside a majority of the books for Julia’s birthday and the girls’ St. Nicholas gifts, they did each get a book  when the order arrived. They were thrilled. And frankly, so was I. I’m hoping that with the help of Scholastic I can help the girls grow into having a deep love of reading.

Have you ever ordered from Scholastic? How do you encourage reading for your children?

Remember last week, that stupid comment I received from a lady at Chick-fil-A? After reading my post, my dear friend Leah, from A Momma on a Mission, had a brilliant idea :: What you should say to a pregnant mama.

A few things to keep in mind when dealing with a pregnant mama – she’s tired, she’s emotional, and most likely, she’s dreaming of a day when her belly fits into a shirt. And while I absolutely adore being pregnant {and have come to terms with all one billion stretch marks my children have given me}, a little tact while talking with people is much appreciated – especially from other mamas.

1. If you’ve asked a mama when she’s due {and please do this with care}, when she gives you her answer say “Wow! You look great for being X weeks along!” Please refrain from saying she looks bigger {or smaller} for how far along she is.

2. Don’t point out that she looks tired. She knows she looks tired, because she is tired. Instead, focus on something else. I recently had a friend say “Your hair looks amazing.” It was random, but it made me feel really pretty.

3. Always, always compliment a pregnant mama. Even if you don’t know her, stop her and tell her she looks nice. Go ahead and say “You look glowing.” Chances are good that one little comment will make her day.

4. If a pregnant mama already has kiddos running around her, it’s pretty likely she’s running even lower on energy than others. Don’t point out that fact {it’s like an oxy moron}. Try saying “Your children are beautiful!” or “Your children are delightful!” It might not be a compliment specifically about her, but really, it is.

5. Kindly offer a pregnant mama a sweet treat. But, please, don’t assume that all pregnant mamas eat chocolate all day and toss their nutritional sense out the window when those two pink lines appear. Yet, do realize that a salted caramel truffle can go a long way.

6. Sometimes {just sometimes} pregnant mamas might complain about how horrible they sleep. Don’t tell them it’ll just get worse when the baby comes. If they are veteran mamas, they already know that. If they are first time mamas, it’ll just discourage them. Instead, say these sweet, sweet words – “Go lay down while I clean/help with the kids.”

7. If you know a pregnant mama like me, she doesn’t like to feel like she’s a delicate being that should just sit around while others do all the work. Please ask her for help and make her feel useful. Just maybe don’t let her move furniture, or she’ll be dealing with some crazy Braxton Hicks contractions for days {uh, not that I’d know anything about that…}.

8. Tell her she’s blessed. Most mamas know just how blessed they are to have their babies to care for. But there are times that lack of sleep, aches and pains, along with tantrums, can make us forget just how great mamahood is. A friendly, meaningful “You are one blessed mama!” can make our days brighter.

9. “You’re doing a great job.” Oh, how I love those words. Whether it’s about my pregnancy, or my parenting, knowing that I’m doing my best, even when it doesn’t seem like it, makes me keep pushing through the tough times.

10. What is/was yours favorite thing to hear while you were pregnant?

Visit Amanda at Oh Amanda for more Top Ten Tuesday.

Last night, while out with the girls, I had a woman stop me and say “You must get this all the time, but are you over due?“.

When I say no, she back pedaled as if her life depended on it. Then, when Julia and Hannah walked up to me, the lady’s eyes got really big, her mouth dropped and she said ::

“Oh my G-d. Are they both yours? How close together are they?”

I smiled and doled out the facts she requested, ordered our Chick-fil-A meal and walked away.

And when I walked away, I was hurt. Yesterday was a pretty ridiculously hard and emotional day. Then to top it off with a poorly thought out comment/conversation, it just sent me past any remaining good humor.

As I sat drowning my sorrows in a chocolate shake, watching the girls play, I wondered ::

What should be my response when people say stupid things?

I hear my fair share of stupid comments. Perhaps it’s the expansive belly. Or the children just too close in age for other people’s comfort. Or the fact that sometimes {just sometimes} I don’t look quite as put together as the world might like. For any number of reasons, I feel like a magnet for the thoughtless, stupid comments people make.

Typically, I can take them in stride and laugh it off. But every now and again, once pierces my heart. And it hurts.

Yes, I am pregnant.

Yes, I do have a big belly.

Yes, my girls are only 18 months apart.

Yes, their spacing was intentional.

Yes, I did leave my house without make up and my hair a complete mess.

Yes, I am fully aware I shatter your neat little view of the world.

So what should be my response when people say stupid AND hurtful things?

Love them and rejoice.

I didn’t really want to love that lady after her comment, but I knew I had to. I knew I had to make a choice to forgive her. I knew I had to hand over the pride she’d crush, the wound she’d made, the hurt she’d given. Slowly {very, very slowly}, I let God start whispering to me. Telling me the truth.

Yes, you are pregnant. Rejoice, for I have given you a son.

Yes, you do have a big belly. Rejoice, for I have made you to give life.

Yes, those girls are 18 months apart. Rejoice, for I have given them to you as a gift.

Yes, their spacing was intentional. Rejoice, for I planned it.

Yes, you did leave the house without make up and your hair a complete mess. Rejoice, for I know your beauty.

Yes, you did shatter their neat little view of the world. Rejoice, for Jesus did too.

I can’t stop people from saying something hurtful. But, I can stop it from hurting me. What people say, and even what I say to others when I’m being stupid, does not change what God says about me and my family.

So when people say stupid things, I will rejoice in the Lord and what He has said about me.

My creative juices are starting to slow down these days. Perhaps because I’m full on nesting {and being more creative in that arena}, I’m left with very little writing creativity. Top that off with my overwhelming need to sleep every single minute I can, I’m pretty much useless when it comes to thinking beyond the next three minutes – let alone a whole blog post. Thus, today, you’re going to learn more random factoids about me.

1. I’m really obsessed with pigtails right now – On the girls, on me, on Pinterest. Where ever. I am just really into pigtails. They look super adorable on the girls and frankly, they are an easy alternative to my every day ponytail.

2. I’m getting obsessed with running – I’ve been dreaming about it. Mapping out future runs. Downloading my playlist. In addition to my internal countdown to Joseph’s arrival, I’ve now started counting down to running. Seriously, I think I must be crazy.

3. I love chocolate milkshakes after delivering – Not sure if that’s TMI, but after I delivered both girls, I had chocolate milkshakes with every meal while I was in the hospital. I don’t know what it is with a good chocolate shake, but man I craved them. Thankfully, Culver’s is on our drive home from the birthing center, so I already have my milkshake hook up for post-delivery.

4. I almost bought the girls a cat – We went to Pet Smart for a “field trip” last week. They have an adoption center with several cats ready for adoption. There was one cat the girls really liked and my mama instinct / nurturing feeling was to get them one. Then my logical / Jonathan-would-trip-out instinct kicked in. No cat was adopted. At least not yet…

5. I am the worst roadie tag along – I will fall asleep in the car driving to the grocery store a mile away. I’m not sure if it’s a blessing or a curse. Well, it’s a blessing when I need to sleep and a curse when Jonathan needs company on long drives.

6. I am the best roadie tag along at 3 in the morning – Along with not being able to stay awake in the car, I have this weird ability to drive through the middle of the night. Like that cruel 1am-5am shift. Seems counter intuitive, but for some reason I am most alert to drive during those times.

7. I cried during a Google commercial – It’s a really sweet commercial about a dad writing emails to his daughter as she gets older. Even thinking about it makes me teary eyed {watch it here :: Dear Sophie}

8. I drink out of the same Texas cup day after day – I got some plastic Texas Longhorn tumbler cups. I refuse to drink out of anything else right now. I just keep filling it with water and then rotate to a new cup every couple of days.

9. I packed Joseph’s diaper bag yesterday – Sure, I still have 5ish more weeks before it’s “go time”, but the diaper bag is packed. And my bag may or may not be partially packed too {don’t judge, I’m a planner}.

10. This blog post took way too much brain power – And now I need a nap.

What’s one random fact about yourself?

Visit Amanda at Oh Amanda for more Top Ten Tuesday.

With great confidence, I knew what we were going to name Julia and Hannah. In fact, Julia was “named” 3+ years before she was born. And Hannah was named while we were still pregnant with Julia. Their middle names did give us some trouble, but even so, they seemed so much easier than trying to name Baby Boy.

Baby Boy. It has a sweet ring to it, huh? And while I don’t mind referring to him as Baby Boy, it turns out that the government does actually want you to give your child a name once they are born. You know, so they can be registered as person and all. Which means, we really should come up with a name other than Baby Boy.

And so we have ::

Joseph Windham. Sounds sweeter than Baby Boy, don’t ya think?

Joseph was Hannah’s “boy name” choice. We had others in the running, but once we decided on Joseph, we kept a pretty tight lid on it. Then when we got pregnant with Baby Boy, Joseph surfaced again. Joseph means “Jehovah increases“. Aside from the Biblical aspect of the name, my brother Fletcher’s first name is Joseph.

Come the next 6weeks, when Baby Boy Joseph makes his way into this world, he’ll have a name. Albeit, just a first name, since we still can’t decide on a middle name….

What’s your Friday Joy?

We’ve been cloth diapering for the last 3.5 years. We started when Julia was about 6 months old and haven’t looked back. There are so many things I love about cloth diapering, the biggest being my belief that it has helped with smooth potty training transitions.

But one cloth diapering aspect I’ve never tried is cloth wipes. It’s always been in the back of my mind, I just haven’t made the plunge. Until now.

This week I found a yard of fleece for $2 at Hobby Lobby. And while fleece isn’t the number one choice for cloth wipes {flannel or terry cloth are}, I figured I don’t have much to lose. And the fact that it’s an awesome deer print pretty much sold me {I’m a sucker for random, off the wall fabric}.

I measured our wipes box {which is 8″x4″} and then cut my fabric to fit the box accordingly. The best things about fleece is that you don’t have to sew it, since it won’t really fray. However, I found that the wipes seemed a tad too small, so I decided to sew two 8×4 pieces together.

They aren’t the prettiest things in the world, but they are for a baby’s bottom after all. They are super soft and I’m hoping they will do the trick.

Have you ever used cloth baby wipes?
