Proverbs 31, or Why I love Fareway

I’ve never viewed myself as a Proverbs 31 wife. I read though the passages and find myself faced with a woman who seems completely above all. Stays up late working, gets up early to prepare for the day, is always joyful, laughs at every worry, the definition of resourcefulness. Me. Yep, I’m not touching that with a ten foot pole. I really desire to be like her. I want to bring joy and peace to my household, be a helpmate to Jonathan, but I just don’t find myself matching up to her.
Yet God is gracious. I might not be able to get up before my family, buy and sell property, but, but I can find some good deals on groceries.
Since the beginning of March I’ve been trying to be more resourceful and mindful of my grocery shopping. I’ve been going through the local store ads, buying items in advance when they’re on sale, and buying more bulk for freezing. I’ve had some hits and misses, some days of thinking “Man, I just wanna go to Wal-Mart” but I think I’ve found my groove. All thanks to one little store – Fareway. The Fareway closest to my house has some amazing deals on produce. Like, wow amazing. For example, last week I bought 12 zucchini for $2. They were on their last leg, but cut ’em up, freeze ’em and bam!, you’ve got yourself cheap, good zucchini to steam for future dinners.
What makes me laugh most of all is just how much God cares about details.
Back in February I put our Food Saver up on Craigslist. Never once have I used this saver. It’s in mint condition with all the tubes, bags, etc. Guess how many people emailed me. Zero. Seriously, not a one.
Well, today I was prepping some green beans to freeze when I remembered, or rather God reminded me, that I have this uber cool food saver. I got it out, dusted it off, read the instructions and gave it a whirl. Whoa mama! I love this thing! What have I been missing? Hello?!? Amazing contraption. For real.
So, I might not fit every verse of Proverbs 31, but I must say God’s grace has been pretty great in showing me that I’m still doing a good job of caring for my family.
Earth Hour
Posted on: March 23, 2009
There have been a lot of changes in who I am, or rather what I focus on, over the last several years. I feel that college was probably my most outspoken years, as I assume it tends to be for most people. However, that doesn’t mean that I am not still highly opinionated (just ask Jonathan), that I am not still very passionate about certain causes, and that I am not willing to take a stand for things I believe matter most.
WWF is hosting Earth Hour on March 28 at 8:30 pm. The premise behind their mission is to take a stand for our earth and the impact we are making. The idea is to shut off your lights for one hour as a means to give back to the earth. It’s a way to show your willingness to stop consuming and to start giving back.
Our family will be taking part of Earth Hour and I encourage all of you to do the same. Be creative; have a bonfire, eat by candle light, enjoy seeing the stars, even host an Earth Hour party. Take a stand for our Earth, remember that God gave us dominion over this world and as such we need to care for it, not destroy it.
Gardening, step 1

I started my seeds this past Sunday, as that was my mental cutoff to time everything for the last frost. Part of me thinks we could have done everything sooner, but this still gives me between May 1 and May 15 to plant in-ground.
Here are some pictures:

Greenhouse, before adding seeds.

Greenhouse, with seeds.
So far, I’ve planted three varieties of tomatoes, green beans, carrots, cucumbers, lettuce, onion and hybrid squash. I’m waiting for some more seeds from my friend, Margarita, in Texas. There is a plastic lid to cover the greenhouse for added protection. This is my first year to start from seed (usually I buy the plants from a local nursery) so I’m excited, but nervous, to see how everything turns out! Grow, little garden, grow!
Drying your own fruit

Kelsey mentioned dry fruit and the possibility of doing it on her own. In a moment of impulse, I thought I’d dry some of the bananas and apples that we had on hand.

I sliced up the bananas.

Can I just say there is nothing like a good knife?! After 3+ years of so-so cutlery, I got a super nice Pampered Chef knife at Christmas. Amazing…
I peeled one apple and soaked it in lemon juice to cut down on “browning” (per recommendation on a site I found).

The next apple I decided not to peel or soak (I wanted to prove/disprove the browning theory and cut down on time).
I layered them on two cookies sheets covered in parchment paper.

I put them in the oven, preheated to 200, for 5 hours.
Walla! We have dried fruit.

I don’t think soaking the apples made any difference in keeping them from getting less brown. The bananas looked nothing like what I see in the store. I later read that it helps to soak them for several hours in water before hand. Which means you’d need all day (literally) to do this project. Once I figure out the costs I’ll let you know if it’s worth doing it yourself. One good thing – they taste really yummy!
Jonathan isn’t too sure how cost effective it is to use the oven for 5+ hours. I’ve found a formula that says it’s 1.5 units for every hour used (at such a low heat), but I can’t find on our bill how much the electric/gas company charges per unit.
I’m still doing research to find if there are any other ways to dry fruit without spending money on a dehydrator. I’ve read about hanging them outside for a few weeks (can you say, bugs?) but I’m not quite adventurous for that.
Coupons? Maybe I’m too lazy

I will be honest, I hate couponing. Perhaps I just don’t get it, or really, maybe I’m too lazy to put forth the effort. Whatever it is, I really don’t like dealing with coupons. Sure, I’ve used a few and liked the effects. But how often do I need Greased Lightning or Wacky Mac pasta? I’ve found that every time I get a coupon, I have to go out of my way to buy a certain brand, most of which contain HFCS or other chemicals I’d rather just avoid.
But, alas, I really, really need to work on our food budget. And I’m wondering how to go about doing this that will 1) not take loads of time to do (like spending hours searching the internet for .50 cents off), and 2) allow me to keep purchasing items that I will actually use. I’m not partial to name brands (save for Cheerios… don’t ask why), and am willing to branch out on just about everything.
Ideas? Suggestions? How do you cut your food budget? Where do you get good coupons?
How green my garden grows

Well, not yet. But soon enough!
I have picked up the items I need to start my greenhouse this week/weekend and can I just say I am pumped!
I’ve still got some research to do (which will be what postpones my seed planting), as I shamefully admit I’ve never done a garden from seed. In the past I’ve cheated and got the seedlings already grown from a local garden shop. But this year I am venturing out and starting everything on my own.
I’m wondering how this will all go once I’m 9 months preggo and can’t even see my feet, but I’m still moving forward with the plan because it will be a nice getaway (and money saver!).
I’ll start posting pictures once I get the ball rolling on everything.
Cha-ching!

Sometimes I wish I was more frugal. That’s not to say that I spend money like a crazy woman, but I don’t cut coupons or actively search out good deals. Take clothes shopping. I’m not a super big fan of shopping, so if I find something I like and it’s on sale, I’ll buy it. However, Jonathan wants to make sure that he is getting the absolute best deal. If there are a pair of jeans for $2 less at another store, he will get those – even if they aren’t his favorite brand/color/best size. Me, I don’t really care all that much. I just want in and out as fast as possible.
This last weekend, my friend, Leah, sent out a coupon for $1 off organic canned tomatoes. This particular brand is at Wal-Mart for $1.49, but, this month the co-op had them on sale for $1.29 (normally $2.29) – since the co-op runs their sales on a monthly basis (1st-30/31st) I sometimes forget their prices. So, this afternoon I ate lunch at the co-op with Jonathan and saw that the cans were an even better deal there with my coupon than at Wal-Mart. I didn’t have the coupons on me, so decided to come back after Julia woke up from her afternoon nap.
I printed off 19 coupons (random number – I thought I had done 20) and went to pick up eggs, milk, yogurt and my discounted cans.
I must admit I felt a little weird with so many cans and using so many coupons. Not sure why, just like I was putting out the cashier or what not. But, the end result was worth it.
19 cans of organic diced tomatoes not on sale – $43.51
19 cans of organic diced tomatoes on sale – $24.51
19 cans of organic diced tomatoes on sale with coupon – $5.51
Total money saved – $38
Sarah’s new found joy of saving money – Priceless
