Why Putting Christ in Christmas is Ridiculous

Posted on: December 5, 2013

I’m starting to think that perhaps the most divisive issues among Christians aren’t theological issues but holidays. Celebrate Halloween? “Shameful! Pharisee!” Tell your children about Santa or that dreaded Elf? “You should tie a stone about your neck! Jesus is the reason for the season!”

Listen, I’m not knocking celebrating Christ’s birth. If Jesus wasn’t born all hope would be lost. We would be in utter darkness. In him was life, and the life was the light of men (John 1:4). Without the pivotal moment of Christ’s birth, everything would be for nothing.

Here’s what I am saying – lighten up. Celebrating Christmas isn’t a command. Nowhere does God tell us to celebrate Jesus’s birth with a holiday. Nowhere does God say that Jesus is the reason for the season. Actually, if we want to become pedantic, Jesus is the reason for ALL seasons. Perhaps {and this is a super radical thought} rather than harping about celebrating Jesus at Christmas, we could, I don’t know, celebrate Him all the time? Whoa. Mind-blown.

Honestly, our family doesn’t do Santa. Or that elf {which I harbor really negative feelings toward. But that’s a whole other post. Ha!}. While we decorate, things are kept low key. Our kids get just a few presents. We use December as one more chance to talk a lot about Advent. But, we also blare secular Christmas songs, watch Elf and Charlie Brown’s Christmas, bake dozens of cookies and bask in the beauty that is this time of year.

Ultimately, Christmas is just one more chance to talk about Jesus. It shouldn’t be seen as the only time we celebrate Christ’s birth. It’s just one more chance to celebrate it. Putting Christ in Christmas is ridiculous, because Christ is already in Christmas. Just like He is in Memorial Day or Grandparents Day. He’s there because He is always there, in everything. Because in Him and through Him all things have been made. We don’t need Christmas time to celebrate Jesus. We celebrate Jesus all the time because He is worthy of our praise.

This Christmas let’s make a truce. Let’s not shoot arrows at one another for our personal Christmas celebrations. Let’s not grumble when a parent lavishes their children with gifts {“spoiled brats!”} or roll our eyes when someone doesn’t “do Santa” {“ohh… so high and mighty! Pish.”}. Instead, let’s realize that Christmas is one more chance to talk about Jesus, not the only chance to talk about Him.

This is excellent. I couldn’t agree with you more! I always struggle this time of year with the political side of Christmas, from the ‘Happy Holidays’ issue to the ‘Santa’ question. Trying to ‘keep Christ in Christmas’ really is a silly thought. As if humans are capable of taking Him out of anything. I love your nutshell of Christmas just being another occasion for us to talk about Jesus. Thanks for this post!

Leah – Yes! Who are we to dethrone God, right?! Ha. I get a good chuckle out us humans sometimes with our “big” ideas and how we think we really are capable of pushing God down. 😉 I’m glad you enjoyed the post.

I love this so much! I grew up in a very legalistic home (not my entire life, but for the younger years – and my parents are amazing, wonderful people who apologized for all the craziness lol!) but we grew up not being aloud to have a christmas tree… things like that. Anyway, so when I had my own kids, I wanted to give them the fun traditions of Christmas and let them enjoy the wonder and joy the season brings. Sadly, Jacob is pointed and asks about every single tradition (thus leading to his knowledge that Santa was a man who lived a long time ago and is now dead! oops!) So this year, we’re focusing on love. As we do all year long, but like you said, it’s another amazing chance to celebrate, so let’s just do that instead of eye-rolling at others! Love when you write, Sarah!

Jodi – it’s a very awkward dance of “don’t tell your friends, but here’s the truth”. My kids really want to enjoy Santa, so this year we have incorporated him a lot more than we have in the past. Something we also do that’s a lot of fun, is St Nicholas Day. We do stockings and lots of candy and focus on how fun Santa is/was. Ultimately, I want Christmas to be a joyful time for them, a time that they reflect on as special and magical.

What a great post, and so true! As newer Christians we’re kind of muddling around and trying to set a foundation while deciding the way our family will celebrate each holiday around Christ. And in that I understand and know the judgement that can come with these decisions. I feel it is based on fear from both sides (of any argument really), fear that we’ll somehow mess up or that others wont like our choices. Which, is what leads to the arguments and defensiveness. We love our extended family but it’s been hard to make our own way and not offend them. AND it should be a time of joy, love, and special celebrations so it’s important to understand where you stand and love others where they stand as well. Thanks for sharing I too love when you write.

Great post! Sometimes I just want to tell people to chill out and not take themselves (and others) so seriously! Every time a holiday comes around I can’t believe all the stuff people write/say about what Christians should/shouldn’t do or celebrate. Why get so hung up on every issue that it becomes a hindrance to living life to the fullest for God’s glory? It seems like some people think that if you are having fun, it must be a sin. If you’re focusing on doing things for others instead of judging them for everything they do, you will live a more happy/fulfilled life!
