A Wife Loved Like The Church

Angel Food Ministries

Posted on: March 23, 2011

Last night I had dinner with some friends, when they asked if I’d ever heard of Angel Food Ministries. I admitted that I had not, and they proceeded to tell me about the coolest food ministry I’ve heard of in a long time.

Angel Food Ministries distributes food boxes filled with frozen meats, fresh or frozen veggies, canned goods, etc., for a discounted price. It was started in 1994, with the desire to help families afford feeding themselves. Their food packages range in price from $16 to $51. Typically speaking, you save about half your money for the goods received {a $30 package is about $60 worth of food}.

The best part is: it’s open to all families. I love that. I love finding easy ways to save money, while at the same time giving to a good cause. Because the more I buy from Angel Food, the more they can continue to help provide for other families.

While you can order as many packages you want, the distribution is only once a month. I’ve missed the deadline for March, but plan to order a box come April. Now I will say this: I’m sure the food isn’t organic, the meat isn’t grass feed and the mixes they provide are modified in some way. But, shockingly, I’m okay with that. You know why? Because I have a peace about feeding my kids non-organic veggies. And while in my ideal world, we would only eat grass fed beef, right now, our budget won’t allow it. So, I figure, even if the package isn’t my “ideal” it is pretty amazing. And feeding my family amazing food works for me.

Have you ever heard of Angel Food Ministries? Would you ever participate in a food ministry like this?

I have not used Angel Food Ministries, but have looked into it before. It’s one I regularly recommend to my lower-income patients at work. I do remember reading once about some possible sketchiness with the financials of this non-profit, but I don’t remember what it was. But I think the concept is great and would definitely consider it.

I found the link to what I read. Again, the concept is good, but there are clearly some concerning things with this ministry:

I would like to point out that the article you referenced was written in 2009. The dessert is often a frozen pie or some other type of dessert, often it is cookies or something family friendly. In our area it has never been twinkies and we have only received moon pies once in over 3 years.

I have not, but I think it’s a great idea. I would definitely participate. We can’t qualify for wic or medicaid because we make too much (just barely). Sometimes my husband doesn’t get paid because he is a pastor and it depends on how much comes in week to week, but because we “make too much” on paper no would help me regardless of the missing pay checks. Of course we are not starving. My latest blog is about freezer cooking, but the truth is my mom bought all of those groceries and I am grateful for the family and friends who have helped us through this time, but it is good to know about an organization like this. Oh and that last paragraph you wrote is so truth. Sorry for the REALLY long comment 😉

Wow, that is hard I am sure! While we aren’t “strapped for cash” to buy our groceries, it can be really overwhelming to pay $8 for some chicken (and that’s our cheapest “healthy” option) that lasts one 1-2 meals. I think I should do some more research based on the link Alicia gave me, but I’m pretty sure we will try it at least once to see if it will be a benefit to our family.

Very cool! It’s good to have peace about eating non-organic, non-perfect food. You have to do what’s best for your family with the resources God gives you, and he honors that, organic or not!

We do Angel Food Ministries at my church and it’s been such a blessing to countless families in our area!

I am a co-host site director at our church for Angelfood. We have been a host site for over 3 years. If you have it in your area, please give the food a try. It is not any different than what you would find in your local stores. My family orders from there every month and it has helped to stretch our paycheck dollars. We have found their pork chops to have the best flavor of any that we can get. We LOVE Angelfood Ministries!
