In memory of Brittney – my new symbol of hope tattoo

Posted on: April 3, 2010

Tomorrow is Easter. The day that changed who I am. The day my Savior conquered death and rose again. The day that brings me hope.

This afternoon I got a tattoo. The tattoo is named the “symbol of hope” and it represents a hopeful cure for colon cancer.

Colon cancer? Why colon cancer? Nearly two years ago my dear friend Brittney Mann lost her battle with colon cancer. She shared with me that it was one of her aspirations to get this same tattoo once she beat the cancer. Since she wasn’t able to, I decided I would get the tattoo as a way to honor and remember her. But it’s even deeper than that.

I love that it’s named “symbol of hope”. I know where Brittney’s hope laid. Not in a cure. But in Christ.

Christ is my hope.

Because of His death on the cross, my sins were washed clean.

Because of His resurrection, my life is eternal.

In Christ alone, my hope is found.

I miss Brittney more than I can express. I joyfully look forward to the day when I can see her again. When we can rejoice together in our completeness, in our healing, and in our hope. And with even more joy, I look forward to that same day when I can see my Savior, face to face, and find my hope fulfilled.

This tattoo may not be a cross or a picture of Jesus, but it represents Christ to me. It is a symbol that He came and conquered. It is a symbol that He loves me and died for me. It is a symbol that HE is my hope.

While on this earth we may never find a cure for cancer, but Jesus holds the cure for our sins through salvation in Him.

that is awesome sarah! andy just asked me if i wanted to get a tattoo in the same place.. with some how having our children on there.. kind of like my bracelet i got for simeon’s bday! love it!

I think that would be a super idea! If you ever want a brainstorming partner, let me know. I love thinking up tattoo designs. 🙂 I was just sharing Simeon’s story tonight with some gals at church.

I never would have thought of using a tat as a witnessing tool but I believe you’ve done it….precious girl

Nana – I’ve got three now and all three are specifically for witnessing/sharing Christ. I figure if it’s permanent it better mean something!

This is amazing! My Grandma battled colon cancer for over 5 years but sadly lost the battle in summer of ’09. I’ve been thinking of getting a tattoo but can’t decide if I want this star or just the normal blue ribbon. This one has more meaning but the otehr one looks more meant for a guy haha. I was thinking of getting it on my ankle too. Wanna help me!? haha

Amazing. I really love the tat. I nice to see something new and original.

I love this tattoo. I was just diagnosed with colon cancer and im only 26. How old was your friend? What stage was she? Its definitely a scary thing and im very sorry to hear she lost her battle. All i can do is keep my faith and put my trust in the lord that i will be able to overcome this. Im thinking about getting this tattoo as well to keep my spirits up and everytime i look at it make me keep moving forward. Thanks for sharing this.

I came across the photo of your tattoo on Pinterest. I was drawn to the photo as I have the same tattoo. I got the tattoo in the summer of 2008 while my dad was battling colon cancer. Unfortunately, my dad lost his courageous battle with colon cancer in September 2008 after fighting for 14 months. Whenever I look at my tattoo I think how of brave and amazing my father was. I know you feel the same about the friend you lost. It’s strange that we have this common connection without knowing anything else about each other. My thoughts are with you.
