Signs of Fall? Or, I Miss Iowa in the Autumn – a Top Ten

Summer isn’t over until September 23. That means 38 more days of summer. Summer. My least favorite season. Ever. And my dislike has nothing to do with being pregnant during my first Texas summer in 7 years {though, it certainly isn’t winning any points}. Or that I’ve never been a fan of triple digit numbers when it comes to weather. I just don’t like being hot. Ever.
And while many people take signs of browning leaves and grass, such as this
as impending autumn weather, here in Texas you’d be wrong. That’s how our grass has looked since June.
As my friends across social media fill my screen with tales of cool weather and leaving their windows open, my heart misses autumn and Iowa. Because Iowa knew how to give a proper fall. And fall is my favorite season. Ever.Β
1. Pumpkin Patches – I love picking out larger-than-my-head pumpkins. There’s something so fun and festive about pumpkins.
2. Apple Orchards – Ahhh… Wilson’s Orchard. How I will miss you and your wonderfulness this fall.
3. Crisp Nights – I love needing to pull on a cardigan at 8 o’clock in the evening because of a fresh crispness in the air. Love. It.
4. Fire Pits – And with crisp nights always comes fire pits. Long conversations with Jonathan and friends while the girls sleep. Simply heaven.
5. Open Windows – Windows wide open filling the house with a coolness and reprieve of summer.
6. Leaves Change Color – There’s something awesome about seeing leaves become golden before the fall to the ground. It’s just so peaceful.
7. Geese Migration – This might seem funny, but I love watching geese migrate. And we lived near a pond in Iowa, so I always got to see them make their flight South.
8. Pumpkin Spice Latte – I can’t think of Pumpkin Spice Lattes and not think of fall. And I can’t think of Pumpkin Spice Lattes and not think of my sweet friend Katie and our mornings spent chatting while our kiddos played {sad/missing you face}
9. Rain – A cool rain that might chill you or make you shut those open windows. At this point, I’d love any rain. Any.
10. Newness – For most people, they think of spring as new. Not me. I have always seen fall as new. New school year. New chapters in life. And this year, new baby. Fall in my mind always equals something new and exciting.
What’s your favorite season?Β

My fave season is Fall, without a doubt. I LOVE it! And Connecticut falls are just like those you described! I absolutely love the changing leaves on our abundant trees that cover the mountains… so stunning that people come from all around to see it. π I’m not fussing about summer this year though, either… after the horrific winter we had, I’m just happy to be snow and ice free for the time being! π

I did a top ten list about fall today too!! And I used to live in Texas – Houston – and so, so missed New England when September would roll around. I feel your pain.
Stopping by from oh Amanda! π

Do you have these things during winter? Not sure I could live without some of these things! Definitely couldn’t live without smores. They didn’t make the list, so I’ll assume you still do them!

We do a lot more outside October through March (aside from swimming). I haven’t been here for fall in 7 years, so I can’t remember what we did then (plus it was college so will look different anyways). But yes, we can have open windows and pumpkin lattes in February so it evens out.

Imagining fall without a lot of these makes me truly sad. Thanks for reminding me to appreciate life in the Midwest.

Autumn is my favorite season also. It’s really beautiful here in Western Pennsylvania! By the way, you’re list of 10 captures it all but I’d add that darker blue of the autumn sky and the lengthening shadows of a fall afternoon!

I so agree about feeling the “newness” of fall. I absolutely love fall. Really October through December is my favorite time of year, so many good things happen during that time. I never thought about it, but I’m guess the new school year had a lot to do with my growing to love fall. I was nerdy and always looked forward to starting school again. Plus it meant new clothes, and the sooner it got cooler, the sooner I could wear my new jeans and sweaters! I know lots of people who love Texas, but I don’t think I could handle the summer there. I would love to move North though. Especially back to New England. You get the nice falls and mild summers. With those 2 thingsI could so handle the winters.

You got all of the great parts of Fall in there! Our weather has finally cooled off in the last week (sorry!), but I’m hoping it doesn’t heat up again and skip right through Fall… I’ve started to love Fall as I’ve gotten older π
P.S. I always think of Fall as the “new time” since I’m a teacher–September is the beginning of my new year π

i’m so with you friend! maybe we could do one big road trip back in the fall to iowa- wanna? π

Fall isn’t a great season for me because it means winter’s coming. We have bitter cold and long winters. I guess that’s what I get for living in northern Canada ;).

If you looked in my closet, you could tell within 3.2 seconds which season I prefer. FALL! I love the colors. I love the weather (MN), and love the smell of new school supplies π
which reminds me of one of my fav movies:
Don’t you love New York in the fall? It makes me wanna buy school supplies. I would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address. π

aww! I feel for you my friend. Seriously, I have the same dislike only applied to Winter. I’ll do my best to send some cooler weather your way. You’re an incredible lady…such hot weather AND being pregnant. whew!

I feel like you and I are in the same boat in a lot of respects. We also just moved from the north to the south, Chicago to Oklahoma, with it’s wicked heat and I just wrote a blog post about Fall! Though I know it won’t be the same here. And I am missing it already! I am pregnant with my third as well and homeschooling my daughter who is entering kindergarten this year. Your blog inspires me to be a better mom, wife, homemaker; I love reading your blog!

For some great photos of autumn you can always try vtweb.com until September 23rd comes around! A lot of great Vermont pics from all four seasons with a special Vermont autumn section. I hope you all enjoy it! Excellent for Windows wallpaper too.

Don’t worry the grass down here isnt always all brown like that! It’s just this year because of the drought this year π¦ My neighbors is green as can be because he waters it so much!

Fall is my favorite too. Although ever since moving to Michigan I have fallen in love with summer. Our summers are so amazing that we tolerate our winters for them π
