A Wife Loved Like The Church

Posts Tagged ‘30 Before 30

About 2 or 3 weeks ago, I got an email from my friend, Becky, who lives in NYC. She simply wrote “I wanna send you something…what’s your address?” Last week, this showed up at my door:

She sent a card that said “After I read your blog about “Pennies for Paris” I realized I had an over-abunance of spare change weighing down my already full and heavy purse. I thought I could contribute to the cause, give the pennies a good home as well as bless you in a small way.”

My socks were rocked off. I am truly blessed to have such an amazing friend. And who knows, I may even get the chance to go back and visit the Big Apple just to see her again.

Thanks Becky!

It’s a new month and a new week. I love when months start out at the beginning of the week. Makes it seem easier to start something new. It’s Monday. It’s February. So guess what, I’m starting something new.

As I mentioned before, I have a love of New Year’s Resolutions. While I’m not technically doing any this year, I am slowly chipping away at my 30-before-30 list. In January I wrote about saving for Paris, #10 on my list. And I began learning piano (no easy task!), #6. This month I am starting three new endeavors; training for my half marathon, #1, learning to make crepes, #28, and sharing the Gospel with those on my prayer list, #24.

That last one is no easy task either, for me that is.

The first person on my list is my younger brother, “FP”. FP lived with us for nearly 15 months, during 2008/2009. He graciously went to our church, allowed us to be involved in his life and was actively involved with us as a real part our family. We spent most Saturday mornings eating breakfast and sipping coffee for hours. This was always the favorite time of the week for all of us. During his stay, FP saw the Gospel lived out, not only in our lives, but also in the lives of the people around us. He saw us stumble, sin, ask for forgiveness, rely on grace and get back up again. We shared the Gospel with him continuously.

And then he left.

He moved back to Tennessee last May. That was a very hard time for me. Life in the house was becoming strained. FP was 18 in every sense of the word –  ready to spread his wings, make his own choices, and explore the world on his terms. I played the role of a mother well – sad to see him leave. Although, I was glad to let go of some of the weight of tough responsibilities. One of the hardest parts for me in watching FP leave, was knowing that he had never given his life over to Christ.

In the past 8 months we’ve kept in close touch with FP. Last week I asked him if I could pray for him for the entire month of February. Specifically, that God would reveal Himself in new and moving ways. He said yes.

And so begins my February Challenge. To pray for FP every day. I’ve set a timer on my phone for the same time each day. I expect to see God and something amazing in my life and in my baby brother’s.

I’ve counted all my pennies. Paris, here we come!

Jonathan and I are planning an anniversary trip to Paris this fall. Can I confess that I am maybe just a tiny, tiny, little bit excited? I’m already dreaming of crepes, wine, cheese and visiting Pont Nuef, where we got engaged. In order to go, Jonathan said that I needed to raise half of our travel funds. Which is no small feat for a person with no steady income and who isn’t nearly as business savvy as my friend, Leah. I’ve been saving money since last summer and shortly before we moved, Jonathan said he’d donate our change jar to my funds. I’ve been wanting to count the money for a while, but haven’t had the chance until this week. My grand total in coins? $58.90.

$36 in pennies

and

$22.90 in silver

I got a huge kick out of counting all those pennies. Every time I hit a dollar I thought, “Oh, yeah baby!”. Here’s the beginning:

I roped Julia into helping me out, handing me pennies as we went:

Here’s my system, that Jonathan laughed at; I’d make 10 columns, 2 pennies deep, 5 rows long:

Here’s the finished product; I really need some penny sleeves:

And some more pennies for my jar:

I like New Year’s resolutions. I really do. Perhaps it’s because I love starting something new. And never finishing. Which, correct me if I’m wrong, is what defines a New Year’s resolution. This year my list seems to be a mile long, ranging from be more organized, to learn to have more self-control. Grand plans that I can already see dying quick deaths.

About 4 weeks ago, after watching Julie & Julia, I decided to make a list of 30 things to do before I turn 30. I’ve slowing been working on it, fine tuning my goals. Some of them seem downright ridiculous, while others actually seem do-able. I decided, instead of having a resolution, this year I will mark off 12 things from my list. Lofty plans, my friends.
